Eventually I learned that, contrary to what one might think, it's easier to avoid falling (and when you do fall, it hurts less) when you let yourself move a bit more quickly. Until then, there was much falling, both forward and backward. I still have the bruises.

I have a friend who broke her leg (badly) while (trying to)stand still on a baby slope! I think she proves your maxim true.
